Спрос направления выражается в английском языке ограниченным набором выражений. Спрашивание начинается с обращения к незнакомцу на улице как предлог его потревожить. Остальное немного видоизменяется. Направительный диалог всегда формален и обычно состоит из 2 высказываний каждого собеседника.

Спрашивание направления выражается общим или особым вопросом. Общий вопрос произносится нисходящей шкалой с низким подъёмом для выражения неуверенности.

Порой такие общие вопросы принимают падение для предлагания.
‘Сould you ‘tell me how to ‘get to \Elton Street? – Вы, наверно, знаете, как пройти на улицу Элтон?
Особый вопрос произносится нисходящей шкалой с падением.
Ex\/cuse me, ‘which ‘way is the \bank? – Простите, а где тут банк?
Фраза вроде excuse/pardon me привлекает внимание прохожего и поэтому звучит громко, с падением-подъёмом. А слово street после названия улицы безударно.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go on a camping trip, set up their tent, and fall asleep. Some hours later, Holmes wakes his faithful friend.

Timewise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, it’s evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Holmes is silent for a moment, then speaks.
